6 - Mocking the Americans

We all know that most Americans are self-obsessed and nationalist (without being unpleasant with foreigners though), and there is no other Miss than the following one to embody that stereotype so perfectly (if stereotype there is...).
Here is a video of a girl mocking the Americans by playing the role of an American Miss herself...:

( P.S. : There's just one thing I didn't get in her speech: hem...what's a "map"?! :-) )

Xams at Xmas

This year, I'm going to have a very special Christmas. Indeed, I'm spending the holidays with Thomas More and Henri VIII; Daniel Jones and Joan of Arc may also come later in the evening, and we'll all share presents under the Christmas tree... more or less! ...hum... :-)

Here is a saying in order to motivate your study in these hard times:

“Much learning makes men mad.”

NO... that was the wrong one!
Here is the right saying:

"Where there is a will, there is a way!"

Merry Christmas to everyone and good luck for the exams*

4 - The lift: what a wonderful invention!

How could we, Germanists from the fifth floor, live without a lift? This question crossed my mind yesterday when I realised with horror that the lift of our university was out of order!
All day long, I heard people (me included) puffing and blowing in the stairs, and complaining of sore legs!

Thankfully, the lift was mended this morning! :-)

But I'm curious to see what would happen if we had to live without a lift for at least two weeks... Just imagine... no lift at all... I think we'd start to bunk off classes that take place on the fifth floor! :-) Or, by dint of climbing up the stairs five or six times a day, we'd develop our muscles and end up looking like Schwarzie!!
Wouldn't that change our life in some way?!

That's why I like this invention, and I hope everyday that it'll be in working order to bring me up to the fifth floor. :-)

No news is good news....

The news of the week

Worsening political disorders in Belgium after 160 days of negociations; Polish immigrant shot down by police officers in Canada; huge hurricane kills thousands of people in Bangladesh; Finnish student fires at his classmates; global warming still keeps going; Europe on general strike; starving children in Africa; ...

If you have better news, just tell me...

2 - Happy Easter !

Early November... The artificial Halloween pumkins and the plastic spiders have already been removed from the shops and are being replaced with all kinds of chocolates for the next event (Saint Nicolas).
But Saint Nicolas is only happening in December! Why are so many people in a rush? Can't they just wait until end November to sell or buy their chocolates?!
In some shops, I even saw chocolates already displayed in the food departement at the end of September (which means BEFORE the stuff for Halloween!). I don't understand... Do they fear there won't be enough chocolate for everyone?! ^^
I also heard that the American malls started to display Christmas trees ( artificial ones, of course!) along with items for the new academic year! So, in September this year, back-to-school window displays were full of Christmas trees and flashing fairy lights! Nice...

The children of today must be quite lost!
The current situation is sad because children don't wait impatiently for Christmas anymore. The shops are already full of tinsel and artificial snow before we have even started to think of buying presents for Christmas!

However, even children seem to be in a rush! Most of them have become spoilt children: they are quick-tempered and capricious! Thats is why, from now on, I'm going to call them "monsters"! :D
For example, when these "monsters" ring your doorbell on the evening of Halloween and chant this sordid "Trick or treat!", please don't think they want fruit or nuts! No! They only want sugar! They won't be satisfied unless you give them lots and lots of sweets and lollipops! If you give them a tangerine and some walnuts, they will exchange confused glances, meaning "Is she kidding?!".
They can't even believe that a hundred years ago children of their age would have been delighted with a tangerine or an orange!

But no... now, such feasts have no meaning anymore, but "getting lots of presents"! For most of those children (that I call "monsters"^^), Christmas Day doesn't mean "spending time with the family" but "getting a lot of food and presents"!

That's why this article wouldn't mean much to them...maybe...

However, there's no need to be so dramatic about it!
I shouldn't think about that at all!
So, I wish you again a happy Easter! :-)

1

This is my second blog. But my first one in English. :D

In this way, I will practise and (hopefully) will improve my vocabulary.
Don't pay attention to the mistakes; they are here to show that I really need to practise in English!
But you can, of course, pay attention to them in order to correct me. :)

I'm surely not going to have such a huge blog as Simon Lab@'s (I'm really impressed by it, however! Really funny!).
I just want to write, write and write again in English.
But writing without an aim is quite boring (!), so I hope this blog will a) make me practise, and b) learn you some things (sometimes interesting, sometimes just silly!) that I 'd like to share.
